The Healing Power of Reiki

I was first introduced to Reiki by my beautiful friend Sophie, and it was one of the most amazing and magical experiences ever. Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing by working through the unseen (but incredibly real) life force energy that flows through and connects us all. The word itself is made of two Japanese words, the first part ‘Rei’ means ‘Higher Power’ and the second, ‘Ki’ means ‘life force energy’, which translates as ‘Spiritually guided life force energy.’

Everything is made of energy, and everything is connected to absolutely everything else. From the water in the ocean to the clouds in the sky, the plants, humans, animals. Everything is born from the same source and everything returns to it when we ‘die’ (We don’t really ever die, because well, energy cannot be created or destroyed. You were always here and you always will be. Cool hey? :)) Everything is one. Thoughts and feelings are energy as well, so everything we think and feel has an influence on everything and everyone on this planet.  Reiki is based on the belief that everyone has the ability to connect with their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true, a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

My first ever experience with Reiki was incredibly moving. It’s not like a normal massage where you strip off and lay with a towel tucked in to your knickers for a back rub. Instead, you lie fully clothed on a massage bed, and close your eyes. There’s beautiful music, incense and a reiki master to guide you through the process. It’s incredibly calming and grounding. A session can either be hands-on, where a Practitioner will apply a light touch during the session, or hands-off where they will hold their hands slightly above your body. I’ve had both and they are equally as lovely, but I’m a very affectionate, physical touch kind of guy so I love the feeling of being touched softly as I find it incredibly nurturing and relaxing. Reiki makes me feel safe, loved, cared for and very peaceful.

When I was going through a breakup, I knew I had some serious work to do on my emotional well being. I felt really overwhelmed, incredibly lost, heartbroken and guilty. I cried a lot, and there were moments where I felt so anxious that I couldn’t breathe properly. I knew that some deep and powerful soul healing was exactly what I really needed, so I decided to invest in reiki over drowning my sorrows with 8 gin and tonics at a seedy London club. I knew that waking up the next day feeling sick and full of regret was the opposite of what my soul was crying out for. It’s so important to make these conscious choices in our hours of need, rather than letting our ego take over and plummet us in to self-destruct mode (which it fucking loves to do.)

I found a beautiful lady called Rebecca Nicholls (insta: queenofmylife.london) my Reiki queen and fullness coach. From the moment we started talking I knew she’d be able to help me. The advice and guidance she gave me was so perfect, and so wonderful, and made me feel incredibly confident and safe. From start to finish my session with her at her home in Wandsworth was amazing. We spoke in length about how I was feeling, shared stories over a cup of tea and began the session in a beautiful, calming room filled with essential oils which she chose especially for my current situation – a broken heart and a lost soul. The session itself was really powerful, I experienced a lot of intense emotions, I felt very cold at some points, and I could feel the energy from her hands helping to clear my chakras. As she held her hand over my heart chakra I had a vision of myself standing in front of my ex and cutting a black cord that ran between our hearts, and in this moment I feel incredibly free and at peace. That was the first time i’d ever had such a powerful vision during a reiki session and it was such a healing experience. I left feeling floaty and free, with a quiet confidence and far more peace in my heart. If you are currently struggling with emotional instability, feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, fear or blockages in your energy, I would strongly recommend trying a session of Reiki.

For more info you can visit Rebecca’s Facebook page Here where she will be running a free Reiki course from the 12th June. If you choose to try Reiki, please let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear about your experiences. Love you always, Meg x
