Creating a flawless, glowy base has been a passion of mine ever since I first discovered makeup, and still to this day I spend the majority of my monthly makeup budget on trying out new concealers and foundations. Before purchasing anything, I always scroll through makeup alley to read hundreds of reviews before making my final decision. If you haven’t yet discovered makeup alley then you’ll be bloody overjoyed by how useful it is. It’s a life changing tool I use every single day for reading in-depth reviews from consumers – many of which are professional makeup artists, giving you invaluable advice about whether or not to splurge or save your money. A good quality foundation can cost anywhere between 30 to 60 quid so it can be a real bummer when you unbox your brand spanking new Armani foundation only to find it slides right off your face, clings to your dry patches or oxidises within the hour.
Knowing your skin type is absolutely vital – one foundation can be a god-send for someone with acne prone skin, but an absolute nightmare for someone with dry skin. Luckily (or not) I’ve had them all; dry, oily, combination and acne prone – so the following are my top 3 foundations for all skin types 🙂
The Kevyn Auction Sensual Skin Enhancer
The babe of all foundations. This shit is INSANE. It can be used as both a concealer and a foundation, it’s super versatile, hydrating and waterproof. It lasts all day and all night – there have been times where I’ve drunkenly passed out on the sofa wearing it and woken up at 11am with the most flawless face possible (aside from the remains of pizza on my chin). It’s fabulous for all skin types, but if you’re oily then the dewy finish will require a little extra setting powder. The thick and creamy consistency is perfect for dry skin, and I love to mix it with a little moisturiser for a more sheer, day time look (This product is so pigmented, a tiny pot will last you around 17 years.) I use the shade SX 07 (Slight golden/Medium) and the online colour code is really easy to use. Remember, you can always mix it with a little bit of any other foundation to change the shade slightly.
Armani Luminous Silk
Uh. So glowy, smooth, and realistic. You’ve probably heard hundreds of bloggers and makeup artists bang on about this stuff, and for very good reason. The price tag is a little hefty so it’s not something I splurge on regularly, I use it for special occasions only. I’ve used this with both oily and dry skin and it’s suits either. It’s super sheer and dries down to a glowing, slightly matte skin-like texture. For light coverage I mix it with a tiny little bit of dry face oil. And if you love full coverage then it’s super buildable and with a few layers you can create a gorgeous flawless base. One of the most useful things about the product is the extensive shade range, covering a lot of different skin tones so most people can find an exact match.
Too Faced – Born This Way
This is my current Holy Grail. I’ve used it on 3 friends who have all gone out and bought it straight away because they’ve absolutely loved the beautiful and natural finish it gave them. Currently my skin is combination (dry in patches and a super oily T-Zone) and very acne prone around that time of the month, and this foundation is absolutely perfect for me. It’s medium to full coverage, oil-free and smells absolutely delightful. My shade is warm beige and it matches perfectly! (Plus – it’s slightly more affordable!)
